Fallen Embers  & Blowing Embers transport readers to an alternate version of Alaska ruled by a class of decadent mages who have enslaved the shapeshifting indigenous peoples. Kiera, an attorney in "our" Alaska, is transported to the alternate feudal realm one snowy afternoon along with her nephew. She soon finds herself fighting to save three children from an army, and does so by summoning fire.

As Fallen Embers progresses Kiera learns more about the local systems of magic and her own powers. She also must decide whom she can trust—Marco, the young mage she saves, or fierce and handsome Laszlo, the slave captain of ruling Lord Vayu's army? The saga continues in Blowing Embers. Kiera must master the art of war as well as magic as the nobility strikes a blow that steals all hope from the rebelling slaves and crushes Kiera's heart.

Lauri J Owen is a civil rights lawyer who grew up in Idaho's Treasure Valley. She started reading fantasy novels in the third grade and never really stopped. She worked for more than a decade in law enforcement, then went to law school at U.C. Berkeley and moved to the Alaska Bush, where she fell in love with the magic and majesty of her new home state. She now lives in metro Alaska with her elementary school-aged son and her many rescued cat companions. She donates the royalties from her books to no-kill animal shelters. She is current working on Rising Embers, Book 3 in The Embers Series.

Fallen Embers & Blowing Embers are available in original trade paperback and ebook format. Click on the book covers for more information, or visit Lauri's website at www.lauriowen.com.

"We are famine survivors, we fat women,
and ought to be valued for it.
We must have been very useful
when everyone else collapsed with starvation.
We would have been able to sow the crop,
feed the babies and keep the tribe alive until spring came.
If you breed us out, what will you do
when the bad times come again?"

Kerry Greenwood's mystery novel
