Something to think about....

If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

Mother Teresa

Wednesday as I hustled through my morning, running chores, I decided to stop at McDonald's and grab a cheeseburger and cup of coffee.

As I approached the door, I realized a young man somewhere between the late teens and early twenties was hurrying toward the door from a different angle. I knew we were going to reach the door almost at the same time, and I also knew that he looked like he was in a very big hurry and, in my mind, trying to beat me to the door.

I'd better just slow down and let him have it or he'll run over me trying to get ahead, I thought.

But as I stepped up onto the sidewalk and he reached the door, he swung the door open wide and said, "After you, ma'am."

As is my custom when a man opens a door for me, I looked him in the eyes, smiled my biggest smile, and thanked him.

"You're welcome, ma'am," he said, and we approached the cashier with me just a little ahead of him. As I got to the counter, I stepped aside and told him to go ahead. "Oh, no ma'am, you go right ahead," he said. So I did.

After getting my food, I sat down in a spot where there was nobody else around so I could think about a couple of things I wanted to do. In a few minutes, I looked up and the young man was walking toward me, heading for the door. He'd gotten his food to go. But he stopped at my table and said, "I appreciate your generosity up at the counter, but where I come from ladies always go first."

I thanked him again and told him to have a wonderful day.

"And you, too, ma'am. God bless you." And he was gone.

As I sat and thought about what had happened I had to feel ashamed of my first wrong judgment of this young man. I'd assumed he was hurrying to the door to get ahead of me, but he was hurrying to the door to open it for me.

While I was busy judging him, he was busy showing me an act of love.

 A Word From Pat

Ah...October. I still think this is my favorite month of the year. For those of us in the U.S., the temperature is cooling down, and the "feel" of fall is in the air.

Have you ever noticed how quiet October is? The next time you're outside, if you have the chance to be out of the hustle and bustle of city life, take a moment and just listen. The birds have gone eerily quiet. The noise of the summer cicadas and locusts have stopped, and other than an occasional cricket or a bird that decides to break the silence, everything is still. Almost as if waiting for the pending cold weather that is just around the corner. At least, that's the way it is in my neck of the woods. I love to just sit and listen to the silence.

I hope everyone had a great September. I'm happy to report that my life settled down a little. No trips, no sicknesses, no visitors. And because of this, I've had the time to almost finish my latest book, The Best Man. I'm about one good, uninterrupted week away from having it done. I always get excited when I get this close to having a book finished.

But my husband Joe is talking about going to the Biltmore Estate (www.biltmore.com/) late next week and weekend, so I may be interrupted again. We've talked about going there for the 21 years we've lived in Nashville, so maybe it's time we did.

Everyone have a wonderful October. Enjoy the changing colors, the thrill of walking through fallen leaves, and the excitement of approaching holidays.

I can't wait to play in the leaves with my grandchildren.

                                               Love,

                                                                    Pat

Weighty Matters

I had planned to feature a series of articles by Sandy Szwarc in this section for the next few issues. Sandy is one of the most wonderful, commonsensical writers on the subject of weight that I know of.

But when I told her what I was doing, Sandy mentioned that the website her articles are on has gone through some editing and there are now some inaccuracies in the articles. So for that reason, I'm not going to use the articles in this section. But I still highly recommend that you read them.

Some of you may have heard of the uproar about one of Spain's fashion shows a couple of weeks ago regarding models who are too skinny. Maybe the winds of change are blowing.

Ban On Skinny Models Shocks Fashion World
By Andrew Hay

MADRID (Reuters)―The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other catwalk pageants.

Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that young girls and women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.

Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.

But Cathy Gould, of New York's Elite modeling agency, said the fashion industry was being used as a scapegoat for illnesses like anorexia and bulimia.

This month's Reader Review of Wanted: One Groom was posted at Amazon.com & Barnesandnoble.com by C.L. Yanda.

Wow ~ every woman's fantasy comes to life.

Pat Ballard has done it again...she has given me a book to read and a fantasy to hope for! I fell in love with her character, Matt, from the very beginning. Many of us women remember being a teenager and having a crush on a rock star only to have it never materialize into anything more than a silly crush when we look back on it. Hanna Rockwell has hers come true through no doing of her own. Hanna needs to be married by the time she is 30 or she will lose her inheritance and her home will be lost. Hanna doesn't feel attractive because she isn't a size 6 and she's been told by her mother and brother all of her life that she needs to lose weight. Along comes Matt Corbett, the has-been rock star who is recently bankrupt, to her rescue. Hanna doesn't even meet Matt until their wedding day. At the alter, we find Matt..."As he gazed down at her upturned face, awareness dawned on him. He was irrevocably, deeply in love with Hanna Rockwell!" What woman alive hasn't wished for a man to feel this way about her?!

If that isn't enough for you, Wanted: One Groom goes even further. Matt and Hanna do not make love on their wedding night since they have only just met. When they do, we hear Matt saying..."I'm going to make love to you all night. Over and over and over. I'm going to kiss every inch of your body. And when I'm finished, you're never going to doubt that you're beautiful. And you're going to know that you're worthy of any man's love." And he proceeded to do all he had promised. He proved to Hanna that not every man is attracted to petite women; some men like voluptuous curvy women and appreciate their unique qualities.

In Matt, Pat Ballard has created the dream man for most women. How many of us would love to hear a man say..."It dawned on me this morning when I woke up that I'm truly happy for the first time in my life"? Or, "You're the sexiest woman I've ever been with, and I love making love with you, but I also enjoy just being with you like this. I feel like a moonstruck kid this morning"? Or having him write song lyrics about a man who was so in love with a woman that every thought he had was centered around her and to have it be a song about you?

If you're a woman who has wished for just these things, this book will be a favorite of yours and you, too, will fall in love with Matt Corbett. Let's hope that Pat Ballard doesn't tire of writing, because any of us who have taken the time to read her books will continue to look for the next one in print.
